Inkstones are used for grinding ink. To grind ink better, the materials for inkstones are chosen to be fine-grained and jade-like, so that when grinding, there will be no noise. A poem was written especially for inkstones, saying: 'A fine-grained and jade-like inkstone, grinds with no sounds; An excellent one, is worth 15 towns.' A high-quality inkstone was extremely valuable in ancient times.
- How exactly is an inkstone manufactured?
Most inkstones are made of mud taken from an ancient riverbed. The process of creating an inkstone can take a long time. First the mud must be gathered, mixed with water, and filtered. Then the mixture is set in the sun to harden before it's carved, and then fired in a kiln. Finally, it's boiled in wax and polished. You can identify a quality inkstone easily, because it will have a jade-like quality. It always shines and is completely smooth. When you tap it, it sounds like metal and stone. It will not absorb ink, water can be stored in it without evaporating, and it will never be cold to the touch, even in freezing weather.
