We enlighten ourselves in order to prolong our lives and seek immortality in order to guide and protect those not as strong as us. Good intentions aside, our actions violate the cycle of life, death and reincarnation, and the universe seeks to bring us back in line with this cycle. That is what we refer to as the Tribulation.
