The Flying General once went hunting in the wild, accompanied by a hundred cavalrymen and encountered an enemy force numbering in the thousands. The cavalry was frightened and wanted to return to camp. Hearing this, the Flying General reminded them that they were tens of miles away from their camp. If they tried to flee from the enemy, they would take chase and the cavalry's "backs would become a forest of arrows." He instructed his men to advance to within two miles from the enemy camp and unsaddle the horses. They would then look as if they were baiting the army. He reasoned that the enemy commander, fearing a trap, would be reluctant to attack such a suspiciously defenseless opponent.

The Flying General's men could not help but be anxious so close to a large enemy force. He explained his plan to them, telling them that the enemy would, upon seeing the cavalry settling down for the night, think that the cavalry was a part of a larger force and suspect that they were being baited. Night opened, and the enemy troops became increasingly restless and disturbed by the lack of movement within the General's camp. As night wore on, the enemy was sure that, since they had not taken the bait, an attack from the General's real forces was imminent. Fearing this, they withdrew under the cover of night. In the morning, the General led his men safely back to camp. Later in his career, the General was ordered to defend the borders against the same enemy, who, remembering his cunning, dared not attempt an invasion for several years.
