The Placid Sage once worked as a military attaché to a provincial governor. The governor stationed him in a faraway town to meet with the regional commander. The commander was still deployed abroad, and the Sage had no choice but to wait for him in a small in. Half a month later, he ran out of what little money he had, and the owner of the inn thought of nothing but money. Once he learned of the Sage's financial situation, he forced him to live in the firewood shed. Due to his excellent temperament, he calmly bore the degrading circumstances. Days later, he became sick due to the poor environment. Luckily, the owner's wife was a kind-hearted woman. She secretly brought food to him and tended to his illness.

The Sage decided to offer his weapons, a pair of copper maces, to the owner as payment. The owner refused, saying that he would never accept a military weapon as payment. At his wit's end, the Sage decided to sell his beloved horse, which was a rare and precious breed. Luckily, the prospective buyer turned out to be one of acquaintances. She immediately guaranteed all his debts. With her, his fortunes dramatically improved. The Sage would go on to earn great fame as a man that helped the first emperor of the Tang dynasty achieve many victories and as one of the most powerful dynasty. However, when people hear of this story, they are reminded of the uncertainty of the world, a world capable of putting such a great hero into such dire straits.
