- Did you have a son named Keroi?
Yes, Keroi was my son. May I ask what your business is here?
- I heard that Keroi was a girl before the tragedy, right?
Well, it's a long story. Actually, Keroi should have had three elder brothers, but they all died before their first birthday. Every day we would perform every ritual we knew of and fervently pray for the gods to protect them, but it was no use. Then one day, an eminent monk walked by and told us that fate demanded I have a daughter, and that if I were to have a son before then, he would die unless he was brought up as a woman. The monk also said that the son would die within one year should it become public knowledge that he was a man. We had no choice but to raise Keroi as our daughter. We were shocked when we found out that he had fallen in love with Saikon until he revealed that Saikon was actually a girl and proposed to her.

Our family had little wealth or power. Because of this, the Heon family opposed the marriage and forbade the two from meeting. They managed to communicate through letters in spite of this. Several months went by, and my son eventually grew to miss Saikon so strongly that could no longer restrain himself. He defied the Heon family and met with her. He never returned. Why did such a tragedy befall my family?
