The Discerning Prime Minister spoke but once with the Unparalleled Sage and understood the depths of his military genius. A time came when the emperor was leading his routed troops in a retreat to a suitable refuge. Many of the emperor's allies decided to break from the imperial forces and cut their ties with him. The Sage was among those that left. When the Minister learned that he had left, he immediately set chase, too hurried to even report his intentions to the emperor. When it became known that the Minister had left camp in the dead of night, the emperor flew into a rage. The Minister was the emperor's trusted political arm. The Minister returned the next day. The emperor was overjoyed, but some anger remained and he demanded the Minister explain where he had disappeared to.

The Minister explained that he had chased after the Sage. The answer did not satisfy the emperor, who said: "Do you mean to mock Us? Scores of other generals have abandoned Us, yet you do not chase after them. We cannot believe the reason you have given." To this, the Minister replied: "That lot could be replaced with monkeys. As for the Sage, he is an unparalleled genius. Please, Your Grace, appoint him a position befitting the man that has the ability secure Your domain for ages to come." The emperor agreed, and the Sage was appointed the top military leader. As the Minister predicted, the Sage later secured the emperor's power and ended the war.
